Sumailalim ang mga personnel ng Department of Health (DOH)–Ilocos Region at local government units (LGUs) sa tatlong araw na training sa Basic Filipino Sign Language (BFSL) upang magamit nila sa pakikipag-komunikasyon sa mga indibidwal at pasyente na may hearing disabilities o problema sa pandinig.
“We want our health workers and LGU coordinators to have an increased knowledge in the understanding of persons with disabilities (PWDs) and how to improve their attitudes towards disabled patients, especially those with hearing impairment. We want to further improve and make health services better for them that is why every health worker must undergo a BSL for these PWDs to be properly understood,” ayon kay Regional Director Paula Paz M. Sydiongco, sa isang kalatas na ipinadala sa mga mamamahayag nitong Miyerkules lamang.
“Napakaimportante na maunawaan natin ang kanilang mga needs at concerns upang hindi tayo magkamali sa pagbigay sa kanila ng proper treatment and care. At ito ay upang maengganyo na rin sila na pumunta at magpakonsulta sa mga health center dahil alam nilang mayroong health worker na makakaunawa at mag-aasikaso sa kanila sa pamamagitan ng sign language,” aniya pa.
Nabatid na ang mga kalahok sa BFSL ay sumailalim sa basic signs for communication with deaf patients kabilang na ang alpabeto, numero, pagbati, oras, araw at buwan, para sa epektibong komunikasyon, sa konsultasyon sa health care facilities.
Nasa 32 ang participants sa training na mula sa DOH-Ilocos Regional Office, PWD Coordinators ng iba’t ibang provincial, city at municipal government at development management officers.
“Health workers with BFSL skills are essential in every health facility. Hindi tayo dapat magkamali sa pagbibigay ng health service or pagbibigay ng maling gamot, we do not want to prescribe the wrong treatment just because we do not understand what a deaf patient is saying. Lack of knowledge to communicate with our deaf patients is not an excuse. We must learn their language in order for us to understand them,” ani Sydiongco.
Ang BFSL ay isinagawa ng Department of Social Welfare and Development–Area Vocational Rehabilitation Center sa La Union, mula Oktubre 27-29, 2022.
