Chinese asar sa NBA, pero nanood pa rin ng game

SHENZHEN, China (Reuters) – Libu-libong Chinese basketball fans ang nanood ng exhibition game ng Los Angeles Lakers at Brooklyn Nets dito Sabado, pero may nagpaalala din na di dapat sumawsaw ang liga sa politics.

Sa isang tweet nakaraang linggo, sinuportahan ni Daryl Morey, general manager ng Houston Rockets, ang pro-democracy protests sa Hong Kong, at dahil dito iniwan ng Chinese sponsors at partners ang NBA.

Tinatayang mahigit $4 billion ang kinikita ng NBA sa China.

Sa labas ng arena nung Sabado, ilang protesters ang nagwagayway ng Chinese flags at posters. “Morey must apologize to China,” nakalagay sa isa. “Violations of national sovereignty will not be tolerated,” saad ng isa pa.

Ayon sa Chinese state media, ang tweet ni Morey – “Fight for Freedom. Stand with Hong Kong” – ay panghihimasok sa ng China affairs.

Ngunit binalewala ng 20-year-old Chinese university student na nanood ng game Sabado ang controversy at sinisi ang foreign media.

“Sport is a pure thing and I’m not going to stop going because Morey spoke about things he doesn’t understand,” sabi ng istudyante.

“If the NBA became harmful to China’s interests, we would reject it. But this wouldn’t be such a big deal if you foreign media would shut up about it,” aniya.

Hinablot naman ng mga pulis ang poster na isang lalaki na nagsasabing “NBA get out of China.” Sinabi naman ni Phoebe, isang 22-anyos na chemistry student na nakasuot ng Lakers jersey, na hindi sana siya manonood pero meron na siyang tiket. Aniya: “The US needs to understand it can’t meddle in other country’s politics. If the NBA does this again I’d rather it would leave the country.”
